Have you ever searched the web for a 3D printable item and come up empty?
At our September Maker Monday, we’ll explore how 3D printing, computer-aided design, and artificial intelligence can turn an idea into a useful, real-world object. No technical background is needed.
Our speaker, Ryan Steere, will walk us through the process he uses when faced with a problem: identifying what is needed, developing an idea for a solution, creating a 3D model, and ultimately producing a part on a 3D printer.
Traditionally, this might involve designing the part using CAD software such as Fusion 360. Today, AI offers another approach. You can describe what you want in ordinary language, have AI help create the design, and use free software such as OpenSCAD to turn that design into a file ready for 3D printing.
And we’ll try it live! The audience will be invited to suggest something to design. We’ll select an idea and see how far we can take it during the meeting using AI and 3D-modeling tools.
Our speaker will also share examples from his interest in astrophotography, where he has used 3D printing to solve unusual problems—including creating custom parts that allow equipment and technologies from different decades to work together. It’s a great example of how 3D printing can provide solutions that simply aren’t available to buy.
The evening will be less about learning complicated software and more about learning a new way to think about making things: identify a problem, imagine a solution, design it, and make it.
As always, the second half of the meeting will be devoted to questions, troubleshooting, and repairs. If you've taken one of our 3D printer classes or are experiencing problems with a printer or other maker project, bring it along. Our instructors and experienced members will be available to help diagnose problems and get you back up and running.
