March Maker Monday

February Maker Monday

The next Maker Monday meeting will be on February 19th. This meeting will showcase recent projects and include a review of the Ender 3 V3 SE desktop 3D printer, and a BBC Microbit project used for pinewood derby races. If you have a project you would like to share, bring it to the meeting.

August Maker Monday

August 21, 2023 is the regular date for us to have our monthly meeting. 7-9 pm. However we have decided to use this meeting as a work night for our volunteer instructors to assemble and test the robotic arms we purchased for an up-coming class We will have work tables set up and we will be building the arms. All makers are always welcome to our meetings. If you would like to come and help out, feel free. We just want you to know that this will not be one of our more typical meetings. We expect to return to our normal format in September.

Monday’s Maker Monday meeting. It is huge and it is fast! 300 x 300 x 410 mm. Rolf has it all set up and operating. He will show us its features and we will have a chance to learn all about it.

The next class that will be offered by Schantz MakerSpace is a hands on, active learning experience building your own tabletop 3-D printer from a kit. Announcing our next build class !

Our next class will take place on Saturday Jan. 14, 2023 and Jan 21, 2023. We will be building the Ender 3 (version 2) tabletop 3-d printer. This has been our most popular class. It is limited to 10 participants, and it will fill up fast. Our volunteer instructors will take each class member step by step through the process to build the machine from a kit. In the second Saturday session will we learn to program and operate the machine. The workshop costs $200 and you take your machine home afterwards to continue learning. Intro to Microprocessors: Control the World!

Class Announced! On October 15th, Greg Barbu will be leading a class at Wayne Center for the Arts titled "Intro to Microprocessors: Control the World!" A one-morning introduction to using the Arduino microprocessor to interact with LEDs, buttons, buzzers and sensors. In this class you will learn how to use a breadboard to assemble circuits, how to load and modify Arduino programs, and create a working microprocessor application. You will take home a plethora of electronic components and an Arduino board to continue using your microprocessor to control the world.

Maker Mondays are BACK!

Join us Monday, April 18th at the Wayne Center for the Arts Auditorium (237 S Walnut St, Wooster, OH 44691) from 7:00-9:00pm for our first Maker Monday of the year! We can't think of a better way to get back in the swing of things than to get geared up for 2022 Maker Faire Wayne County! Tom Hammond will be on hand to provide a preview of the event, which will once again be held at the University of Akron Wayne College campus from 11:00am-2:00pm. In addition to Maker Faire, we will also be discussing Elliott Liggett's feature in Make Magazine, as well as a local effort to provide a 3-D Printer Lending Library available to the community. We sincerely appreciate all the support and encouragement we've received over the last few months. Unfortunately, Schantz MakerSpace remains shutdown due to the Coronavirus Pandemic. We had hoped things would improve enough that we could offer classes again in 2021, but that has not been the case. We are a volunteer based group. The coronavirus has affected many of us and our families. It is for that reason that we are unable to schedule classes at this time. COVID-19 Update

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Schantz MakerSpace has been shut down over the last year while we wait for conditions to improve. We are thrilled to see vaccines being distributed and the number of contracted cases continuing to go down in Ohio. However, we feel a strong sense of responsibility to our community and will be cautious about restarting activities. If things continue to improve, our hope is we will once again be able to offer our workshops in Fall 2021.

Colossus Micro LED Display Build @ Wayne Center for the Arts! Updated to show March 2020 class

This March (2020), Schantz MakerSpace is offering an exclusive build class at Wayne Center for the Arts. COLOSSUS MICRO! This two session workshop (March 14th and 21st, 2020) takes students through the process of building an LED Display from a kit of electronic parts. Students will learn the applications of these electrical components and how they interact with each other to make the display work. We will then walk students through an animation software that will allow them to program their display in thousands of creative ways. Cost for this course is $125. 3-D Printers take shape at Orrville High School

Snowmen aren’t the only thing you can build in the winter! Schantz MakerSpace traveled to Orrville High School this morning for a 3-D printer build. We had 13 students from 4 different school districts (Orrville, Waynedale, Rittman and Norwayne) coming together to put Creality Ender 3 machines together from kits. By the end of the session, every student had fully constructed their machines and were running test prints. Now they each have a machine that can bring their imagination and creative designs to life. Special thanks to Dr. Tim Vierheller for hosting us in the Orrville Maker Lab.

OHS Maker Club Takes Flight with Drone Workshop

Time to fly!Yesterday we joined students from the OHS Maker Club for some flight training with drones. Our Schantz MakerSpace volunteers walked students through a "How NOT to Crash" course and discussed the ways drones are helping to solve problems in today's world. Then students got to test their skills on our obstacle courses and joined in a team effort to solve a "Toxic Waste Mission". Careers involving this skill set are growing in number each year. The best way to grow your skills is to get out and play! Looking forward to coming back next week for a session on programming the drones for autonomous flight. October Maker Monday - Ventrac!

Join us on October 21st from 7:00-9:00pm for a Maker Monday hosted by Ventrac. Denver Steiner (Director of Information Services) will be giving us a tour of the Ventrac manufacturing facility where you will see the process of transforming sheet metal into tractors & attachments shipped around the world. Included in the tour will be a peek at the custom software used to drive the operation.Bring the kids!!! The 2nd part of the presentation will be focused on STEM tools aimed at exposing kids ages 6 to 12 to programming and electronic concepts. Denver runs a weekly “Robot Club” that meets in the winter for employee kids and will demo some of the materials he uses from Lego and other platforms such as Arduino and Raspberry Pi.

Maker Faire is Almost Here!

The Greatest Show and Tell on Earth comes to Wayne County this Saturday, May 18th for the 3rd Annual Mini Maker Faire! Make your way to Wayne College from 10-3 to see over 60 presenters, food vendors and fun activities. You're in for a show at this family friendly event designed to showcase the creative minds of inventors, tinkerers, artists, scientists and crafters. Schantz MakerSpace will be showcasing its new creation "Colossus" (an 8' x 4' programmable LED light display), so make sure to stop by our booth. Make sure to bring the kids and visit our volunteers at this year's Harry Potter themed Kids Zone, where witches and wizards are invited to learn how to build wands using muggle magic. Our most popular build returns with a session on theTEVO Flash 3-D Printer. The TEVO Flash comes 50% built out of the box (giving us more time to print and review software), is ultra quiet, and has a larger build plate than its sister model, the TEVO Tarantula. This is a 2-Saturday workshop, covering April 13th and April 20th. Students must be able to attend both classes. Cost for the kit and the workshop instruction is $300.

Salivate all you want, but we're not talking about tasty pastries. Jim Kennedy has explored the applications of Octoprint software on the Raspberry Pi and has now developed a workshop to show us how to utilize it. A Raspberry Pi is a credit-card sized computer that can be used for a wide range of maker projects. Octoprint software allows you to use the Raspberry PI to remotely perform and monitor all aspects of your 3-D Printer. The course is scheduled for Saturday, April 27th from 8:00am-12:00pm at the Schantz MakerSpace Training Facility (5200 Cleveland Rd, Suite D, Wooster, OH 44691). Cost for the course is $125.00. Special thanks to Norwayne Local Schools for letting us come to the Elementary School Library and introduce some creepy crawly technology to these 4th graders! Prior to the arctic blast, twenty students learned about potential careers in 3D Printing, 3D Animation and Engineering Design, all while using 3D Pens to create motorized bugs. Excited to reveal a new video on Schantz MakerSpace and the Maker Movement! Get an inside look at the excitement and energy taking place right here in Wayne County, Ohio. Our maker community continues to grow in members, projects and missions. In just our first year as a non-profit organization, we've offered 20 workshops, serving more than 250 students. We've built over 100 3-D Printers, 30 computerized lights displays and 20 CNC Routers. We not only built the machines, but we taught the students how they work, how to use the software, and how to incorporate machines into their businesses. We served four different school districts, bringing our programs into the schools to teach the next generation of makers, and will expand to include more schools next year. We had 12 students take part in our WIFI xLights Workshop. Session 1 (of 2) involved soldering parts to a control board and cutting/splicing wires. Session 2 will dive into creating shapes with our lights and learning how to program animations.

We had a dozen makers join us at our new Wooster training facility on Saturday to kick off our Wifi xLights Workshop. Over the course of three Saturdays, these students will learn how to build, program, and design their own Arduino Controlled Lights Displays.
